dc.europeanity | The phenomenon of immigration is neither novel nor recent. Migration movements have been part of the human experience long before modern and contemporary history, with economics, politics and religion fueling such movements. But since the early 2010s due to the dramatic and sudden increase of immigrant flows to western countries (Europe, America) from the developed regions of the world, immigration has become one of the crucial issues for the modern societies. The large-scale inflow and permanent settlement of migrants is no longer confined to traditional immigration countries. On the contrary, for countries like Greece and Italy which until recently were migration senders rather than hosts, the recent increase of immigrant influx was a new and unexpected situation for both the local population and the governments. Particular, Europe is a main migration destination for various reasons. Migration in the European countries is influenced by a combination of economic, environmental, political and social factors: either in a migrant’s country of origin (push factors) or in the country of destination (pull factors). For contemporary European societies and within the context of a general European culture, the flows of migrants and refugees who are looking for a secure and prosper society, is an ongoing challenge as various ways of behavior are formed raging from the level of rejection to that of assimilation into the mainstream cultural environment. | en_US |
