dc.europeanity | The Ancient Athenian Democracy module intends to develop students’ European identity and conscience of common European civilization by highlighting both community and diversity, continuity and discontinuity in European history. Its main European feature is the research and discussion of several aspects of democracy and democratic values, which are generally accepted in modern European states. Although the module underlines major differences between ancient direct and modern representative democracy, it explains the origins of both types and connects them through European, mainly French, enlightenment political theory, either based on or refused ancient philosophical thought. It also observes common historical motifs concerning the relation and succession between democracy and tyranny/ dictatorship and vice versa through historical examples from both antiquity and modern history of several European countries. The module offers several stimulus for inquiry on modern European institutions and practices, such as the European Parliament of European Elections. Moreover, it acquaints students with basic terms of political theory, necessary for the development of a European Civic Identity, namely civic rights and obligations. It refers to different democratic practices known in most European countries, such as student board elections or municipal elections. As its emphasis is on ancient Athenian institutions, this module leads to the conscience of the common European past. Western societies and their students realize their connection with ancient Greek civilization and the origins of their own constitutions. In advance, basic principles of the Athenian democracy and main offices or collectivities are explained with an eye to modern problems of democratic values. Finally, the technical vocabulary for this module and mainly the respective exercises ensure the creation of a set of terms in many languages, ready to be exploited by many schools all over Europe, and the etymology provides a useful tool for its best comprehension. | en_US |
