Adopting unhealthy eating habits is the leading cause of premature death and preventable diseases. Over the last three decades, the proportion of overweight and obese people in the EU, especially children, has risen dramatically. This is indicative of a growing trend of malnutrition and lack of exercise in the EU population, which is reasonably expected to increase future rates of certain chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, musculoskeletal disorders, and even certain mental illnesses. In the long run, this situation will have a negative impact on life expectancy in the EU. as well as in the quality of life of a large part of its population. In this context, the commitment of EU member states in favour of a healthy diet and exercise, as well as in the fight against obesity and major nutrition-related diseases is a political priority.en_US
