Today’s society is characterized by a deep socio-economic, cultural and environmental crisis, which highlights the concept of active citizenship, as a particularly important term. The needs that are created at national, European and international level, require the active participation of citizens both at decision making level and in the implementation of decisions, regarding everything that concerns them and determines their present, but especially their future. Citizenship is the quality of being a citizen within one's social, political, cultural, economic and educational profile. An active citizen is a responsible citizen, who is informed, knows her/his rights and obligations, expresses her/his opinion and participates actively, dynamically and critically in society either as a member of a body or independently. It works towards the general interest without aiming at any personal benefit. It contributes to the protection of fundamental rights and to the strengthening of democratic life. In particular, the Charter of Active Citizenship draws its inspiration, inter alia, from the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.en_US
